Seat reservations on regional trains in Eastern Norway
With a seat reservation, you can reserve any seat in marked carriages. Seats that are not reserved may be used by other passengers. This way, we can make use of all of the seats.

Use seat reservation to reserve your seat
If you travel on regional trains in Eastern Norway, you may purchase a seat reservation as a supplementary service together with your Season ticket or Single ticket. With seat reservation, you can use a seat map to reserve any seat in specific carriages. You may do this for any departures you wish to use, up to several weeks in advance.
What does it cost?
- Single/Lowfare ticket: + NOK 69
- 7-day Season ticket: + NOK 405
- 30-day Season ticket: + NOK 1030
- 365-day Season ticket: + NOK 10,300
Please note: We don’t offer seat reservation for season tickets with student discount.
How to ensure you get a seat
You can buy seat reservation when you purchase Single and Lowfare tickets in the Vy app or at vy.no.
Season tickets with seat reservation can only be purchased in the Vy app, and this gives you the opportunity to reserve a seat twice a day during the travel period.
Changes may occur
Please note: Sometimes we have to change the seat allocation (direction of travel, window/aisle) due to, for example, differences between train models. This does not entitle you to compensation.
FAQs about seat reservation
The seat reservation carriages are marked at entrance doors, walls and dividing walls as «Setene i denne vognen kan være reservert» («Seats in this carriage may be reserved»). Each seat is also marked with seat protectors with the message «Du må gjerne sitte, men setet kan være reservert» («You are welcome to sit here, but the seat may be reserved»).
Any passenger can sit in the seat reservation carriage, provided that the seat is not reserved. The carriage is also open for standing places. You must be prepared to move if the seat is reserved for some sections of the journey.
If you wish to secure a seat, we recommend that you purchase a seat reservation together with the single ticket, Lowfare ticket or the season ticket in the Vy app.
Seat reservation is available on our regional trains. This means that seat reservation is offered on RE10 Drammen–Lillehammer, RE11 Skien–Eidsvoll, RE20 Oslo–Halden/Gothenburg, RE30 Oslo–Gjøvik and R40 The Voss line.
No. Only the seats in the seat reservation carriage can be reserved and these seats are available on the seat map. If all seats are reserved, the offer of seat reservation will be sold out.
Yes, you can choose your preferred carriage.
The season ticket with seat reservation allows you to reserve seats to and from your final destination, even if you change trains during your journey and, for part of the journey, use trains with no seat reservation (local trains). This means that, at the start of your journey, even if it is on a train without a seat reservation, you can still reserve seats for the part of the journey for which seat reservation is available.
What you must do:
In the app, select a journey from the departure station to your arrival destination. If you have a season ticket from Lysaker to Fredrikstad, for example, you should select a continuous journey from Lysaker to Fredrikstad in your app.
On the front of your ticket you will see that there is free seating on some parts of the journey, in this case between Lysaker and Oslo, and that there is seat reservation for part of the journey, in this case from Oslo to Fredrikstad. Then you must reserve your seat for the part of the journey for which you can reserve a seat, which in this case is from Oslo to Fredrikstad.
Please note that you must reserve your seat before the train departs, to ensure that the seat reservation is available for your journey. This means that the seat must already be reserved when you start your journey on the local train, and you cannot reserve a seat when you change to the train with seat reservation.
You can choose any departure for the part of the journey with no seat reservation. This means that, in this example, you can choose which local train you want to take from Lysaker to Oslo before you join the train with a seat reservation from Oslo S to Fredrikstad.
If you have a season ticket with seat reservation for 7 or 30 days, you can reserve seats on the required departures throughout the season ticket’s term of validity. Customers with 365-day season tickets can reserve seats up to 31 days ahead.
You have to choose a seat for every departure. You can reserve a seat in the app every time you're going to travel, or you can reserve seats for several departures at once.
If you want to make changes or cancel your seat reservation, you can do this in the app.
This will give you, as a commuter, a more predictable daily commute by enabling you to plan your journey to and from work several weeks ahead.
You can have two active seat reservations per day, in different directions. This means that, on a daily basis, you can reserve a seat both to and from your destination.
The limit of two reservations is set to prevent passengers from reserving seats on several different departures in the same direction, but only using one of the reservations.
Your seat reservation is no longer active when you reach your destination, and you can then reserve a seat for the same train service again.
Single ticket
If you have reserved a seat and are traveling with a single ticket, you cannot change seats. If you want a different seat, you must buy a new ticket with a new seat reservation.
Period ticket
If you are travelling with a different departure than the one for which you originally reserved a seat, you can change the reservation as long as the journey has not started. Go in to your seat reservation in the Vy app and click "Cancel" under the relevant departure. Then you can reserve a seat on the departure you want to take.
If you are not going to travel at all, you can simply click "Cancel" under the relevant departure to free up the seat for someone else.
You can attempt to make a seat reservation in the Vy app, without completing the actual purchase. You will then see the seat map showing which seats are reserved.
Nonetheless, you can always take one of the vacant seats, as long as you are prepared to move if someone has reserved the seat.
When you buy a season ticket, you can also buy the option of reserving a seat. You make the actual seat reservation in the Vy app before each time you travel.
- In the Vy app, you see your season ticket and you can choose Seat reservation.
- You then choose which departure you want to travel on.
- Select the seat you want from the seat map and confirm your seat selection.
